--- in an interstellar burst... i am back to save the universe ---
Okay so I guess I'm not back to save the Universe... I just really like that quote. ... And I'm not really back either... Just leaving a quick message.... I have Germany stories and pictures on the way, but I'm going back home to Canada for a week. ... So the updates will have to wait. ...
Until then, chow-down on this link to Playboy... ... ... ... in braille.

--- Shakedown 1979... cool kids never have the time ---
Today I watched the film "24 hour party people". It was awesome and I highly recommend it. ... After watching the movie, I couldn't help but put on music by Joy Division and just kick back and listen... Joy Division is a band I've only started listening to in the last year, but I absolutely love them. The Cure is also a band I've only started really listening to recently. ... Both bands' debut albums are fantastic... Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures .... and The Cure - Three Ordinary Boys.
Strangely enough, both of these debut albums came out in 1979... my birthyear. That's cool. ... Now, when you combine inebriation with boredom and throw in the inspiration after watching a film like 24 hour party people ... you get me trying to see if there's a Wikipedia entry for the year 1979... ... Would you believe it? ... It exists. ... In fact, there's a Wikipedia entry for every year in ... history! ... You can even enter "100 BC" and Wikipedia will tell you all of the big world events in that year. I haven't tested how far back it'll go cause I'm still in awe...
Wikipedia, will you marry me?
Here's some interesting stuff that happened in the year of my birth ... 1979
- Started on a Monday (boring!)
- International Year of the child (boring!)
- February 7: Pluto moves inside Neptune's orbit for the first time since either planet was known to science.
- February 18: The Sahara Desert experiences snow for 30 minutes
- September 7: ESPN starts broadcasting
- December 24: Soviet Union invades Afghanistan
Some famous 1979 births:
- Aaliyah
- Tatyana Ali (From Fresh Prince of Bel Air)
- Mena Suvari (She's hot)
- Zhang Ziyi (She's hot)
- Jennifer Love Hewitt (She's hot)
- Pete Doherty (Definitely not hot ... but entertaining)
- Norah Jones (She's hot ... but only when she sings)
- Heath Ledger (He's gay)
- Claire Danes
- Kate Hudson (hot)
- Rosario Dawson (hot)
- Tracy McGrady
- Mya (hot)
I could go on, really ... Except that I just realized this information isn't so special since I'm guessing about 50% of you reading this were born in the exact same year! ... Anyway, the moral of the story is: Wikipedia is hot.

--- Istanbul, Turkey ---
What a trip! ... I'm really lazy right now so I don't feel like writing excessively about it... I've posted all my (censored) pictures in the pictures section. And below, are my little highlights of what was one of the best vacations I've taken.

Welcome!
Welcome! ... Look! It's those guys in those hats!
Sultanahmet aka "Blue Mosque"... This was truly one of the more beautiful mosques, and indeed structures, that I've ever seen. I especially love the traffic light that got in the way of my picture...
The Ayia Sofya... Formally an Orthodox church, then a mosque and now a museum... It's breathtakingly beautiful and inside there are ancient murals of the name "Allah" directly beside murals of Mary and Jesus. Quite the site.
The Sulimanyi mosque. An architectural wonder that's cool (like AC cool) in the summer and warm in the winter... all without the use of any kind of electronic devices. The architect was so well respected that he was buried in the mosque's cemetary.

Ortakoy mosque. My favorite mosque in Istanbul. It's right on the Bosphorus (The strait of sea water that runs through Istanbul and effectively divides the city into its European and Asian halves).
This is my work friend, Tarkan. (The guy, not the kitten!) ... I was staying with him and his family for half the time in Istanbul. With Tarkan in this picture is one of many stray cats/kittens running the streets of Istanbul. When I asked one of the locals why there were so many stray cats in the city, he replied (in broken Turkish-English): "In your Canada, you are having many squirrels... But in my Istanbul we are all having many cats!" ... ... Cats = Squirrels... gotcha!
More squirrels...
This is the hotel I was staying at... It's one "s" away from being the "ASS HOTEL" ... Too bad I didn't get ass in there... or DID I?
I'm not even going to comment on this picture... it's just too easy.

Something I can use to get "UFUK"ed at the "ASS HOTEL"... ... This picture was taken in the Egyptian market. The funny thing is, if you took away the VIAGRA sign, you wouldn't be able to distinguish it from the other candies surrounding it... I guess there's a reason why they call it Turkish "delight"...
I dunno why I took this... But I like the pic.
Shopping anyone? ... The vendors just outside the Grand Bazaar in Beyazit Square...
One of many hookah shops inside the Grand Bazaar. These particular hookahs really caught my eye cause of their glass and brass design. Not quite something I could fit in my backpack, though...
An eye charm hanging in a shop in the Grand Bazaar... I forgot what the charm is called, but it's supposed to keep away evil spirits ...
The view from a boat along the Bosphorus strait
The Ortakoy mosque from the Bosphorus strait
Fishermen make their living on a 37-degree Sunday afternoon
Burak. A good man disguised as a good man... I met him by chance in a book store and he was kind enough to show me around his University campus and other spots. This picture is him coming out of Shisha retirement...

A hammer inside of a middle-distance Turkish coach bus. The hammer's supposed to be used in emergency situations when people are trapped inside the bus. Or ... you know ... to smack your buddies in the nads while they sleep.
A chandelier inside of the Ortakoy mosque
Perhaps a sign of things to come? ...
what a trip it was!
I shall have to go again, one day, inshallah...
